The Killing Fields is the fourth episode of Survivor: The Australian Outback.

Story

Day 10

As Day 10 begins, Keith and Tina talk strategy. They are concerned about Jerri's comments at the last Tribal Council, in which she named Amber, Colby, and Mitchell as her closest friends on the tribe. Keith and Tina worry that they are the outsiders, and that it's time to shake things up. "I didn't come up here to be pushed around by a bartender wannabe actress," says a miffed Keith.

Day 11

The Reward Challenge, a jigsaw puzzle, promises three chickens and a rooster for the winning tribe. The Ogakors argue with each other and can't seem to get much done, while Kucha works together more smoothly and wins the reward. Most of the Kucha tribe is glad to have the chickens, but Kimmi, a vegetarian, is repulsed. Mike, too, is worried because his food-catching skills are no longer as important with the chickens around, making him less valuable to the tribe. Meanwhile, a mini-forest fire has broken out near Ogakor's camp, worrying the tribe. Fortunately, the fire can't cross the river, so the camp remains safe. Tina talks to Colby about Jerri. She calls Jerri "the most bossy, domineering person I've ever met." Colby agrees with Tina's concerns. He doesn't like Jerri's decision to boot Keith next, because he feels the tribe needs Keith. Tina says she and Keith may be able to strike an alliance with Colby. Jerri chats with Amber and Mitchell. She is a little worried that Colby might jump ship on their alliance, but that she'll make sure it doesn't happen. Later, she makes sure Colby is still tight with her. "It's not like you're making a deal with the devil here," she reassures him.

At Kucha, the tribe agrees to eat their first chicken. Kimmi makes it a point to leave camp before the killing. The rest of the tribe chows down on the chicken. Mike, though, is still determined to make himself useful. Suddenly he sees a pig race past camp, and he's quickly on the hunt. Mike traps the pig and kills it with the spear. Mike feels victorious. The rest of the tribe is impressed with Mike's hunting skill, but a little grossed out at the bloody scene. Kimmi, in particular, is disgusted. Later, the tribe (minus Kimmi) happily feasts on the pig.

Day 12

For the Immunity Challenge, castaways are quizzed one by one on facts about Australia. The tribe with the most correct answers wins. Kucha's Alicia, after missing her first three questions, finally beats Mitchell in the tiebreaker round. Therefore, Kucha wins their third straight Immunity Challenge. A demoralized Ogakor goes back to Tribal Council. Jerri, Amber, and Mitchell think it's a foregone conclusion that Keith will be going home. But a Tribal Council shocker throws them for a loop. The three of them vote for Keith, only to find that Colby, Keith, and Tina have teamed up to vote for Mitchell. It's a 3-3 tie. Everyone but Keith and Mitchell vote again, but the result is another tie.

Jeff announces the deadlock tiebreaker rule: whoever has the most votes from previous Tribal Councils will be booted. Keith has zero votes. Mitchell has one (from Keith at the previous Tribal Council). That vote makes all the difference, and a stunned Mitchell has his torch snuffed.

Challenges

Challenge: Master Mind
The tribes are given two identical giant-sized puzzles made up of several wooden squares that slide within a bigger square. The object is to slide the giant puzzle pieces around the game board to reveal a map leading to the reward. The first tribe to complete their puzzle wins.

Voting Confessionals

Keith and Colby's confessionals are only available on DVD.

(voting for Mitchell) Mitchell, man, you know this is nothing personal, but I'm here to win, and this is what I think's the best way to do that.

Colby Donaldson

(voting for Keith) Keith, you add some tension to the group at times, and my hope is that by eliminating you, we eliminate a little bit of that friction.

Mitchell Olson

(voting for Mitchell) You're the best, man. I'm so proud to have, uh, had you on this team. And when I get to New York, I'm buying the champagne for dinner, buddy.

Keith Famie

(voting for Mitchell) This was not my original intended vote. However, on the way here to Tribal Council, a new scheme was developed. So, in the spirit of the Olympics, let the games begin.

Tina Wesson

Colby did not say anything when he voted.

(voting for Keith) Mitchell, I promised you from the very beginning of this game that I would not vote for you, and I am staying true to that promise.

Jerri Manthey

(voting for Mitchell) This game isn't easy. I didn't come out here to starve myself and to face the elements to keep the weakest person. I'm sorry, Mitchell.

Tina Wesson

Final Words

That definitely took me by surprise. But I guess the bright side is, I get to eat, and I need to eat. Look at me... cripes. I feel a little bit betrayed by some of them, but at the same time, I want to shake their hands and congratulate them for pulling the wool over my eyes because they definitely got me.

Trivia

  • This is the first time that a tie took place during the pre-merge phase of the game.
  • This also marked the first deadlocked tie in the history of the show and also the first time that previous Tribal Council votes were counted at another Tribal Council.
