Survivor Quiz Show (also known as True or Falls, Africa 102, Parang Swing, Snuff It, Face Off, Mixed Nuts, Head Hunter, First Quencher Q&A, Shattered Dreams, Confucius Said, Recall the Feast, and C.A.T.) is a recurring challenge of Survivor. At times, this challenge is a variant of Q and A.

Rules[]

Castaways must answer a series of questions about the local culture. The person or tribe who answers the most questions correctly wins.

From Marquesas to Guatemala, the castaways had objects such as masks or pots, usually held up by ropes, which represent their "lives" in the challenge. Each correct answer gives the castaway the right to break one of their opponents' items or cut their rope. The last contestant left with their object intact wins.

In China and South Pacific, the quiz was held in a sudden-death format; any castaway who answered a question incorrectly was automatically taken out of contention.

History[]

United States[]

In Borneo, Sean Kenniff won an all-expenses paid overnight trip on a yacht, which he shared with Richard Hatch. There, Sean met his dad Jim, with whom he got to spend time on the yacht. After returning to camp Jim gave the remaining contestants care packages from their loved ones before leaving on the yacht.

In The Australian Outback, the challenge would be used as the Immunity Challenge in "The Killing Fields". The castaways were tested on their knowledge of the Australian environment. Kucha won the challenge.

In Africa, the challenge was used as a Reward Challenge. The tribes started at the top of bleachers. Every time a tribe answers a question correctly they will move down one row. The first tribe to reach the ground wins. Samburu won the challenge for a buffet.

In Marquesas, each player had a station with three ropes each tied to a bundle of coconuts hanging from trees. A correct answer gives a player the right to cut one of the other players' ropes, causing a bundle of coconuts to fall to the ground. Losing all three bundles means elimination from the game. Sean Rector was the first eliminated, followed by Vecepia Towery and Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien. The challenge ened with Tammy cutting loose Robert's last coconut bundle, giving her individual immunity.

In Thailand, each castaway who answered a question about Thai culture correctly was permitted to snuff another castaway's torch; once all three of a castaway's torches were snuffed, they were out. Helen Glover won immunity, narrowly beating Ted Rogers, Jr..

In The Amazon, each castaway will have a mask attached with three ropes to a suspended log. The castaways will be asked a series of questions about Amazonian and Brazilian culture and survival skills. If a player gets a question right, they will cut one rope from any contestant. Once all three of a castaway's ropes have been cut, the log will smash their mask, eliminating that player. The challenge came down to Heidi Strobel and Jenna Morasca. Jenna answered the final question correctly, winning immunity.

In Pearl Islands, the castaways must answer questions about pirate folklore. Each castaway who answers correctly would get to place coconuts in the bins of another castaway. When a castaway receives five coconuts, they are out of the challenge. The challenge's final two were Rupert Boneham and Christa Hastie. Rupert answered the final question correctly and placed the fifth coconut into Christa's bin, winning immunity.

In Vanuatu, each castaway is assigned three skulls. The castaways will answer questions about Vanuatu history and culture. Each time a castaway answers a question correctly, they must set another player's skull on fire. The men were quickly eliminated as the women burned all of their skulls. Leann Slaby won a picnic of chicken wings and champagne, and chose Julie Berry to join her.

In Palau, each castaway would be assigned a fire wok suspended over the water. Each time a castaway correctly answers a question about Palauan culture/history, they may lower an opponent's wok. The last person with their flame still burning wins. Gregg Carey won and shared a yacht trip with Jenn Lyon and Katie Gallagher.

In Guatemala, each tribe member had three pots of corn and an answer cube. They are then asked questions on Mayan culture. Each question answered correctly allows them to smash one other tribe member's pot of corn. Cindy Hall won and took Rafe Judkins with her on a reward of a feast, waterfall pool and massage.

In China, the Hae Da Fung tribe was held back after Tribal Council to compete for an overnight trip at a Shaolin temple. The castaways competed in a sudden-death quiz about Chinese culture, with any incorrect answers causing immediate elimination from the challenge. Peih-Gee Law won the challenge and shared the reward with her only ally left in the game, Erik Huffman, and Denise Martin, whom she viewed her as a potential swing vote.

In South Pacific, the challenge followed the format used in China. Immediately following Dawn Meehan's ouster, the Te Tuna tribe was surprised to learn that they would be voting out another member, but had a chance to win immunity for themselves. Sophie Clarke beat Whitney Duncan in the final question to win her second Immunity Challenge in the same day.

France[]

The challenge made an appearance at the final six of Les Aventuriers. William Lecomte ultimately won the challenge and individual reward.

New Zealand[]

Quebec[]

South Africa[]

The challenge appeared as the first individual Immunity Challenge of Maldives, where the contestants would place a rung in their ladder for every question they answered correctly. The first person to reach the top of a three-story tower wins. Letshego Moshoeu and Bonnie Henna both correctly answered the last question, "On which Mozambican island was the third season of Survivor South Africa filmed?" Because Letshego made no mistakes throughout the entire challenge, her lead allowed her to beat Bonnie to win immunity.

Trivia[]

  • This challenge format in Marquesas, Thailand, Pearl Islands, Palau, and Guatemala is similar to Q and A, with the only difference being the type of questions. This challenge actually preceded the current Q and A format.
  • This challenge was critical to the plot in Marquesas. During the challenge, the Rotu Four eliminated the outsiders in the order they were supposed to be eliminated. Realizing this, the outsiders banded together to vote out the leader, John Carroll.
  • Rupert Boneham is the only man to win this challenge as an individual Immunity Challenge. Sean Kenniff and Gregg Carey won the challenge for reward, and every other person that won the challenge for individual immunity was a woman.
  • No contestant has competed in this challenge more than once.
  • By winning this challenge on Day 27, Sophie Clarke became the first person to win two individual Immunity Challenges in one day.
  • Its appearances in The Australian Outback and Africa are the only times this challenge has appeared as a tribal challenge.
  • The nature quiz tiebreaker challenge in Africa used the format of this challenge.
