Survivor: One World was the 24th season of Survivor. It featured two tribes, separated by sex, living on the same beach until a Tribe Switch on Day 12 separated the tribes. It premiered on February 15, 2012.

Production

The season was filmed once again in the vicinity of Upolu, Samoa. It is in the same filming location as Survivor: Samoa, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains and Survivor: South Pacific

The season was filmed immediately after the filming of Survivor: South Pacific was wrapped up. This was done to cut down production costs. The season premiered in February 15, 2012.

Twists/Changes

  • One World Format: The two competing tribes, Manono and Salani, will be competing against each other while living together on the same beach in a more indefinite time. After the Tribe Switch and Reward Challenge in Day 12, the tribes were separated.
  • Battle of the Sexes: The cast will be divided according to gender, similar to both Survivor: The Amazon and Survivor: Vanuatu. Salani and Manono were the all-women and all-men tribes respectively, before the Tribal Shuffle on Day 12.[1]
  • "Do-It-Yourself" Challenges: Similar to how a Reward Challenge in Survivor: Samoa was conducted, certain challenges would require the contestants to run the challenge themselves, with no host overseeing them.[2]
  • Hidden Immunity Idols: Though there will be only one camp, there will still be two Hidden Immunity Idols, one per tribe. If someone finds the other tribe's idol, they cannot use it. Instead, they must give it to a member of the opposite tribe before the next Tribal Council. Furthermore, for the first time, no clues would be provided.
  • Tribe Shuffle: The tribes were switched on Day 12, mixing the men and the women.

Season Summary

The 18 castaways were split into gender-based tribes and given maps to their camps, unaware they would lead to the same location. Despite living on the same beach, the tribes would remain split, building separate shelters and fending for their own tribe.

On the women's tribe, Salani, a strong five-person alliance was formed between Alicia Rosa, Chelsea Meissner, Kat Edorsson, Kim Spradlin and Sabrina Thompson, who were able to control the votes on their tribe. Despite a strong start, the men (Manono) found difficulty with Colton Cumbie, an outspoken member of the tribe who was initially an outsider, often interacting with Salani instead. After Sabrina accidentally found Manono's Hidden Immunity Idol, she gave it to Colton, who used his newfound power to overthrow Manono's dominant alliance and gain control of the tribe.

After a Tribe Switch, Colton found himself again in a position of power on the new Manono tribe, however he was medically evacuated from the game after being diagnosed with acute appendicitis. Meanwhile, on the new Salani tribe, Kim and Chelsea formed a second alliance with Jay Byars and Troyzan Robertson as a backup plan in case their original alliance failed.

Though the sexes entered the merge with equal numbers, the women rallied together and decided to form a voting bloc. Since Colton's removal left the men without a leader, Jay and Troyzan chose to align with the women, voting out two of the men. With a clear majority, the women decided to sever ties with Jay and Troyzan, voting them out despite Troyzan's pleas to Kat and Christina Cha, who were at the bottom of the women's alliance.

As a result, Tarzan Smith was the last man remaining. However, Kat's unpredictability and youthful naivety was enough to convince Kim that keeping Kat around may be a bad idea, blindsiding Kat in a unanimous vote. With only six players remaining, Kim found herself caught between her initial alliance of Chelsea and Sabrina, and the alliance of Alicia, Christina and Tarzan. Although Alicia wanted to vote Chelsea out, Kim convinced Alicia that Tarzan was planning to betray her, leading to his elimination. Alicia and Christina were subsequently voted out at the next two Tribal Councils.

At the Final Tribal Council, the Jury castigated Chelsea for acting as Kim's main pawn and lack of social play, and while they praised Sabrina for her social game, she was berated for her poor challenge performance and being lazy at camp. The Jury blamed Kim for all of their eliminations, with Kim taking responsibility for every blindside. Ultimately, Kim won the title of Sole Survivor of by a vote of 7-2-0.

Trivia

  • One World is the second Survivor season in which the tribe names have been explicitly revealed during the premiere of the season preview of the reunion of the previous season, following Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains.
  • This is the fourth season where tribes are divided by gender, following Survivor: The Amazon, Survivor: Vanuatu and Survivor: Panama.
  • This is the first season not to include the Redemption Island twist since its introduction.
  • This was the most recent season and the only one of the last six seasons to consist entirely of contestants competing for the first time until Survivor: Cagayan.
  • This is the first season to not feature an intro containing clips of the castaways for 6 straight episodes.
    • This is also the first season to not show the full intro until the season finale.
  • This is the second season to have "do-it-yourself" challenges, following Survivor: Samoa.
    • While Jeff Probst is absent during the "do-it-yourself" challenges, challenge producer John Kirhoffer is still present in case of any untoward incidents, but he will not act as a substitute referee.
  • This season officially made Samoa the most used location of the whole US Survivor franchise, with four seasons filmed in the island of Upolu, namely, Survivor: Samoa, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains and Survivor: South Pacific.
  • In the four seasons filmed in Samoa, all four winners were women: Natalie White, Sandra Diaz-Twine, Sophie Clarke and Kim Spradlin
  • This season's Tribal Council is situated over a body of water full of mangrove trees.
  • This is the seventh season with an evacuation and it is tied with Survivor: SamoaSurvivor: Micronesia, and Survivor: Caramoan for season with most medevacs with two.
    • However, this season marks the earliest medical evacuation in the history of the series, with Kourtney Moon's removal in Day 3.
  • This season's Hidden Immunity Idol physically looks similar to that of Survivor: Samoa's
  • This is the most recent season, where the contestants had to gather their own supplies, on a truck they drove in on, rather than having supplies provided at their initial camps
  • This is the eighth consecutive season to have a female to be the first eliminated.
    • It is however the first time in four seasons that a female has been the first and second eliminated.
  • This is the second season where a Hidden Immunity Idol is found in the first episode, the first being Survivor: Redemption Island.
  • The designs for this season's paraphernalia, such as the season logo, buffs and challenge props are similar to indigenous Maori designs.[4]
  • This is the second season where a tribe gives up immunity to the opposing tribe following Survivor: Fiji
    • In this case, however, Manono voluntarily gave up immunity, while the Moto tribe in Fiji was given a choice to do so in order to retain their luxurious campsite.
  • This season has the same tribe coloring as Survivor: Pearl Islands (orange and blue starting tribes, black merged tribe).
    • Coincidentally, the winner was also a female from the blue tribe.
  • This season has the fewest number of people voted out before the merge with four.
  • One World is the seventh season to feature black as the merged tribe's color.
    • It is also the eighth season to feature black as the color for any tribe.
  • One World is the first season since Survivor: Samoa to feature the Survivor Auction.
  • Although this is not the first season when the tribes merged during Tribal Council, this is the first time that both tribes were present at Tribal Council when it happened.
  • This season marked the first time that the first person voted out happened in the second episode.
  • One World is the first season where the final 5 has been one gender (in this case women).
  • This is the third consecutive season with six men and three women on the jury.
  • This is the first season since Survivor: Nicaragua to feature a televised Rites of Passage.
  • This is also the first season since Survivor: Nicaragua to feature a Tribe Switch
  • The font used for the props and tribe names is called "Creaky Frank".
  • This is the second season to have an episode ("Two Tribes, One Camp, No Rules") with neither a completed challenge nor a Tribal Council vote, following "This Is the Man Test".
  • Colton's intense fury over Bill actually stemmed when Bill threw Colton's Hidden Immunity Idol into the ocean. This is a direct violation to the Survivor Rulebook, because the idols are considered as personal items, thus cannot be stolen. Leif told Colton the incident, while production returned Colton's idol to him.
  • This is currently the only season to have the Final Three be entirely female, unless you count seasons with final twos like Marquesas and Micronesia.
  • All three representatives of One World who appeared on Survivor: Blood vs. Water brought a male loved-one with them.
    • Of the three, in One World, two were eliminated pre-merge (a woman voted out, Colton leaving on other terms) and a woman reached the merge. In Blood vs. Water, the same situation occurred.
  • Despite the twist of One World being placed as a major twist and given a name from this season. This is NOT the first time it was introduced, it was originally introduced in Survivor: Thailand along with the fake merge.
