Second Chance is the season premiere of Survivor: Cambodia.
The season starts with scenes of a temple in Cambodia and the Survivors loaded on a truck. Kelly Wiglesworth from Borneo is there and is ready to win it this time. Andrew Savage from Pearl Islands says the only thing bad in his life is that loss on Survivor and he wants another shot too. Spencer Bledsoe from Cagayan says he was cocky the last time he played but says he's now ready to be more emotionally aware. Kimmi Kappenberg played in The Australian Outback and wants a second to make it to the end.
|“||Fifteen years ago, I was in Borneo, the first season, and I almost won. Made it 39 days and lost by one vote. And that's why I'm here. It's been poking at me for fifteen years, little by little. I'm much stronger, and smarter, and I'm a mom now-- I've given birth, okay, I can do anything at this point, right?||”|
|“||I am living the dream. I have the perfect wife. My kids, they're amazing. I've got a great job. I don't have any bad things in my life except... Pearl Islands. My exit-- it's haunted me for twelve years and I'm not over it. And to cure my Survivor pain, I need to give it a thousand percent. I'm gonna leave everything I got in this game and it'll be epic.||”|
|“||Last time I played Survivor I was frankly, cocky. I thought about Survivor in terms of chess but I have done a lot of maturing. I've done emotional growing in that time. People are not chess pieces and they need to be related to on a human level. Being more emotionally aware, I think I'm in a better place in life than I've ever been to play and win this game.||”|
|“||My experience in Australia was cut way short and I wanna have that second chance at my dream of getting to the end. The Angkor Wat temple, that's a total metaphor for this whole game because, you know, you get a little bit of damage, but you know what? You can build yourself up. Fourteen years is a long time to finish that last chapter in the book.||”|
The players unload at the Angkor Wat temple to walk around. Kelley Wentworth from San Juan del Sur played with her dad and says that was her downfall. She's hoping to make moves and have a better game. Ciera Eastin from Blood vs. Water says she played scared last time and that was her problem and she hated voting her mom out and hopes to be fearless from the start. Tasha Fox from Cagayan says she was nice last time so no one at home would be disappointed but says her church family and relatives told her to come back and backstab and really play the game.
|“||Last time I played the game I was with my dad. Playing with my dad was my downfall, absolutely. I probably should've written my dad's name down. But I can't go back on that now. I can take this second chance and I can make the moves that I wanted to make and have a better game.||”|
|“||I really messed up my first time, being scared early on. After discovering that like, I can socially work my way through this game I started to say, "Okay, Ciera. I'll start making some moves." Unfortunately, that had to start with voting my mom out. And this time, I want to be fearless and I wanna see that person I was at the end of the game, at the beginning of the game and just leave it all out on the island.||”|
|“||The first time I played Survivor I was nice Tasha. I didn't want my family or my church members to be disappointed in the way I played the game. When I returned home, my church members were saying, "You need to be more aggressive. You need to lie and backstab like everyone else." So if the saints think it's okay... it's okay. I'm here to win a million dollars and when it's all done, I'll pray for forgiveness.||”|
|“||This second chance means everything in the world to me. I jumped off a pole in the Outback for peanut butter and gave away a million dollars when I did it. Having to replay that history over and over for fourteen years really does a number on you. This is my opportunity to rewrite my own story. I'm more mature, I'm a lot smarter, and I'm not jumping off anything for peanut butter.||”|
Joe Anglim from Worlds Apart says he came up short last season and is ready to make things happen. Kass McQuillen from Cagayan says she was a trouble maker last time and says she likes chaos. Abi-Maria Gomes from Philippines says she made a lot of trouble too and says it was a mistake and says she was aggressive with others and says she has a second chance to patch up those mistakes but says villains have more fun.
|“||Growing up as a kid, me and my dad would sit around and watch Survivor. It was really hard not getting my dad out here for the loved ones visit. It was something that I really wanted to do to prove to myself that I can make it that far in the game. I just came up short and it was devastating. I think this is my time to make it happen right now.||”|
|“||We all have a little devil in us. I was a bit of a troublemaker my season. Chaos Kass, well, she lives somewhere deep within me, but if I don't change, someone's gonna take me down. But I kind of like my legacy thus far. I like the chaos. The only thing that needs to change is their perception of me and then when the merge comes, if I'm there, uh, all hell breaks loose.||”|
|“||You know, when I look back on my season, I made a lot of mistakes. I created a lot of trouble... that was a mistake. I threw coconuts at Skupin's head... that was a mistake. I was too blunt with Lisa... I shouldn't have done that. But having a second chance to come back and patch those little mistakes. But I like having fun. Villains have more fun.||”|
Jeremy Collins from San Juan del Sur says it was hard before because he was so focused on protecting his wife and got blindsided. He says he's ready to go through this again and wants redemption.
|“||Last time when I played with my wife, half my mind was always with her. It's emotional, you know, with Val. I really love her and I care about what she's doing. I wasn't focused so I was blindsided by my own alliance. I went home, took it hard. Now, I want the money for Val more than for me. Like, I just need to go through this again. I'm back for some redemption.||”|
Jeff Probst greets them all on a boat and he says they are all returning players who played just once and didn't win. He says they failed and now have a second chance. He asks Ciera how it feels that fans voted her back to play and she says it's a lot of pressure. Jeff Varner says he thought about this a lot.
Joe says his transition was quick from last season and he grew up watching these players and says they're great. He talks about Terry Deitz from Panama being a challenge beast. Then Jeff talks to Kelly, the first season's runner-up who lost by one vote. She says she replays it in her mind every day. Jeff says their second season starts now. They each open up a bag and get their buffs to break them into two tribes. Jeff says on the boat are supplies to make their life at camp easier.
They are told to get off their boats and grab as much as they can. There is another boat 100 yards away with a bag of rice. The person that gets that will win for their tribe. They have to decide when to stop grabbing goods from the first boat and race to the second. It starts and they dive in and go for the boat Jeff is on. They are all grabbing stuff and load it onto their flat rafts. Ta Keo and Bayon are the two tribes. Kelly starts swimming for the other boat and Joe jumps in to try and catch up. Woo Hwang from Cagayan outdoes her and grabs the rice for Ta Keo. Ta Keo rows into their camp and Woo is thrilled.
|“||Spotting our flag, I wanted to cry. I was so stoked, just like when I recieved my first black belt. It's super honorable. Going into this second chance, I'm not only playing for myself. I feel like I'm playing for everyone that voted for me.||”|
Ta Keo is made of Jeff Varner, Spencer, Terry, Vytas Baskauskas (Blood vs. Water), Woo, Abi-Maria, Kelly, Kelley, Peih-Gee Law (China), and Shirin Oskooi (Worlds Apart). Bayon is Andrew, Jeremy, Joe, Keith Nale (San Juan del Sur), Stephen Fishbach (Tocantins), Ciera, Kass, Kimmi, Monica Padilla (Samoa), and Tasha. Everyone immediately starts to work making camp.
|“||Seeing the beach, it was just day one Borneo all over again. My first thought is let's get camp going. To me it's important to work hard and be useful in camp and it was immediately clear who the workers were. Terry, me, Woo, and Vytas and Spencer. When people don't have anywhere else to sleep and when it starts raining, they're gonna remember hopefully that I was there working and building the shelter. There doesn't get anywhere old school Survivor than me that's--that's it.||”|
|“||It's been a long time since I played and I believe that there is a difference between old school and new school. One of the big difference is now is the fact that the game almost immediately is played when you hit the beach where as an old school player, it was kinda like we needed shelter and we need fire. My social game over for the past nine years has haunted me a bit. As we were building the shelter, I hear my wife's voice in my ear going, "Don't let people walk off all by themselves", y'know make sure that you're getting into the social game because y'know it's a big part in Survivor.||”|
Terry says he thinks there's a huge difference between old and new school. He says the game starts when you hit the beach now and it wasn't like that before. He says his social game has haunted him and he's trying to do that better this time. He talks to Spencer who says they're relying on him to do fire and help make camp. Terry says his son is a Survivor fan and he wrote up dossiers on players and told him to ally with Spencer if he could because he's smart.
Spencer says he's a new school player but an every school fan. He hopes to have more one on one conversations right away this time. Abi-Maria starts freaking out because she can't find her bag and it had a bracelet in it that was of no value but that she liked. Vytas comments on her obsession. Abi-Maria carries on and on about it. She says she said she was going to control her emotions this time, but she's off to a bad start already.
|“||Terry's children- thank you for having your dad trust me because I don't trust anyone and I'm gonna do what's best for me. I'm a new school player, but I'm an every school fan and so it's important for me to have real relationships and to know what people are thinking. I want to have more one-on-one conversations in the first three days here this time than I had in my entire game in Cagayan.||”|
|“||I am worried because my bag disappears no where to be found. I had this like leather bracelet with like some gold stuff in it not real gold but like y'know it's not even like superpowers bracelet. Last time in the Philippines, I totally let my emotions get the best of me and that was one of my downfalls. This time around, I told myself that I was gonna control my emotions and my temper and that's part of the game that I want to play right now but it's so hard for me not to pull out the fangs.||”|
Over at Bayon, Keith is busy building with lots of help. Ciera says everyone is working and getting along and it's very peaceful now. She hopes to rewrite her story. Tasha and Kass talk about frond weaving as they work on the roof. Keith says he didn't think he'd make the cut to come back and is glad to be there. He says 4th place was a hard pill to swallow and says he's going to tweak his game but not change it a lot. Jeremy chats up Keith and says they're going to put everything behind them.
|“||The tribe seems to be in really good spirits. Everybody's working around camp. Everybody's getting along. We kinda have like a really peaceful mantra about us and I'm hoping that by coming out here for the second chance, I can rewrite my story.||”|
|“||I never thought I'd make the cut, but here I am happy to be here now. Last time I kinda coasted on by for a while even without an alliance that can get you all the way to fourth big deal. Fourth place is a hard pill to swallow so I'm not gonna change a lot but maybe tweaked a little bit. Second time's gonna be a whole lot different. No fumbling this time.||”|
Jeremy says he wanted to talk to Keith first off and build an early alliance since they played together. He also wants Tasha who immediately says yes. He then goes to Andrew who is also in and they talk about Stephen and reject him. Jeremy really wants to ally with Joe and thinks he's a shield. Jeremy hopes no one messes this up and says he thinks their tribe is stronger if they can just stick together. Andrew says he has two teenage daughters who had crushes on Joe and says the older one called him "perfect."
|“||With the tribe I feel good, I knew my season that they saw me as a threat so I figure let me talk to Keith. The only thing I'm hoping that if Keith hears my name, then he comes back to me. I'm trying to go strategically and like really use my head this season. So I wanted Tasha, probably the strongest female out here. And I wanted Savage. Savage seems like a real straight-up guy. Another physical threat. But my number one that I wanted was Joe. There's no bigger shield out here than Joe. And it kinda worked out that way and I think it'll be so dumb for someone to mess this up. And I feel like we have the stronger group we can really move on in this game we could make some noise. We just gotta stick together and get each other's back.||”|
Andrew says it was so uncomfortable hearing that form his teenagers. Joe says he knows he was a big threat last season and hopes to ally with alpha males so they don't go after each other right now. Andrew cuts down a tree and the others cheer.
|“||One thing I learned last season was I'm the biggest threat so you gotta make moves to ensure that you go deeper in this game. So either the alpha males go at each other or they align and come together and work together. In the case of like Jeremy and Savage, I think we all are kind of on that same page of let's help each other help each other.||”|
|“||I feel exactly like I felt last time like out of place on tribe where the guys who were not like me. So a "fishbach" out of the water once again. It could be the same narrative as it was for me in Tocantins where I was super out of place and I connected with one of these people who was really in his element and we really went all the way to the end. JT, y'know, he was too amazing he destroyed me at the end. I'm not gonna make the same mistake the second time. All these manly men on this tribe, it is my nightmare. Either I'm gonna be totally in charge of my tribe or I'm gonna be dramatically over-played and flame out very quickly.||”|
Tasha says the guys are impressive. Stephen says he's once again in a tribe of people he doesn't understand and we see him physically struggle. He says he was out of place then connected with someone and he went to the end with J.T. Thomas who destroyed him. Stephen says he's going to overplay and flame out or be in charge of the tribe.
|“||When I played Survivor the first time, I got put on a tribe with all women and they were gunning for me hard and I was fortunate enough to get myself in their good graces. Some people would say, "Oh, he manipulated those women." I didn't manipulate the women I just manipulated their perspective and that's so much of what Survivor's all about and I'm good at doing that. But at the same time, I don't want to be perceived as a manipulator because that's a threat especially early on. I want the women to think like he's a sweet guy, he's down to help out. He's a nice person I want to give him a chance to see what he's like.||”|
Back at Ta Keo, Vytas talks about how he likes playing with women and says he's been accused of manipulating them. He doesn't want to be perceived that way but wants to bond with the women. He wants the women to think he's sweet. Shirin says Vytas is smarmy and wants to lock down an alliance. She talks to Jeff Varner and Spencer and thinks about how Vytas how connections to the other tribe.
|“||To me, Vytas comes off his smarmy and that's how I read about him in his first season and that's how I'm reading him now. So right out of the gate, I want to pull away some clear people that I want to work with and just lock it down right off the bat because it's a rare opportunity to get a second chance ever let alone at this game and I'm not gonna squander it. Vytas has too many connections like over all in this game and he's got very clear connection to the other tribe as well.||”|
|“||Shirin's talking a mile a minute. This train took off and I'm glad I'm on it. I just got on it and I don't care who's pulling me in the woods. "Yes" is your answer. It's like damn Mama, slow down. (laughs) I just got here and y'know a train would only go as fast a conductor will take it and she's just hitting the gas. What just bit my ass? When I did it the first time in the outback, it was all about the adventure. It wasn't about the strategy at all. I haven't played Survivor in 15 years, is this the way you do it now? I don't know if it's 15 years of waiting for this opportunity and here it is, but it's coming at the right time for me. I'll by 50 next year. That's a big year. And most men my age go though a mid-life crisis. They buy a Corvette, they cheat on their wives. I go on Survivor. It's not about a mid-life crisis. It's about a mid-life quest. And the second half of my life begins with Survivor second chance.||”|
Jeff says he's not seeing any of this and is glad to hear Shirin and Spencer explain strategy. They also want Kelley. Jeff says when he played, it was about adventure, not strategy and says he feels out of it now. Jeff says he feels like an baby on game play. Abi-Maria is still on about the bracelet and says it was in Peih-Gee's bag. She says that was interesting but says she's not going to say anything. She goes and tells a lot of people that she found it in her bag. Woo says no way.
|“||Y'know, there was like one name is on the bag, Peih-Gee. I stick my hand in there and first thing I grab out of there is my freakin' bracelet. There was no reason for her to steal my bracelet, but in my head, I'm like, "Hmm, maybe she was trying to waken the Brazening Dragon". But even though deep inside sometimes I wanna scream and let the temper take over me. I can't let this happen. It's my second chance. I have to place-mark.||”|
|“||Abi-Maria, she was causing weirdness around this bracelet of hers that she thought I took and I was just like, "You know what I want to straighten out with her cause I don't want her to think like I stole her damn bracelet." The last time I was on Survivor, I didn't form the relationships that I should have. I've learned that you make friends, but you keep your enemies a little bit closer.||”|
Abi-Maria asks if she took it intentionally. Abi-Maria wonders if Peih-Gee was trying to make her mad but tries to control her temper. Peih-Gee hears this and goes to straighten it out. She tells Abi-Maria that she didn't realize that was her bag and grabbed it. Peih-Gee is trying to make friends but keep her enemies closer.
|“||Out here Second Chances, it kinda sets a tone on everyone like this is it. I was a little bit worried about being voted back in cause I flipped off someone, but I think people are going to think that I'm gonna play and you're gonna have some fireworks. A lot of people are here to prove something. I'm just here to win. I don't care how I do it.||”|
Over at Bayon, Joe is working on fire. Kass offers her glasses to try and start a flame. They look around for Stephen who is out looking for an Hidden Immunity Idol as well as firewood.
|“||I'm going out looking for wood, but I couldn't help looking for the idol because if I don't find that idol, someone else is gonna find it, but this is a huge, huge beach and there's a lot of trees. I walk into this disgusting muddy swamp it was--it was nasty. I don't imagine Jeff Probst just going in that swamp to hide the idol, but y'know it's--it's--it's game on. I need the idol or I need to create a solid link with some people who hopefully won't judge me for being a nerd. I'm sure people noticed that I was looking for the idol. I hope I'm not getting branded with that idol. Probably yeah. Fishbach's looking for the idol. Dang it.||”|
|“||I'm still just in awe that Joe got fire. Joe was just incredible. I mean with this environment and this humidity, we pumped mother nature on day one the game player. And I think it's a great sign of things to come.||”|
He pokes around in a disgusting swamp and doesn't think he'd hide it there, but decides to look anyway. Fish says he needs the idol or to bond with people who won't judge him for being a nerd. Joe works on fire continually while the others encourage him. They get it started and everyone is thrilled. Andrew is in awe of Joe for starting a fire from scratch. He says it's a great sign of things to come.
Over at Ta Keo, it's day two and Vytas is meditating with Kelly. The others wake and talk. Jeff Varner wakes feeling gross.
|“||Day two, I feel like I've never played this game before. It's odd. This game is way too fast. I can't keep up with it. But I'm playing hard and I'm trying not to look like I'm playing hard, but I'm playing hard. There are two divisions happening on this beach right now, there's the people who build the shelter, the "old-schoolers". Old-school wants to do it the way old-school did it. You work and that's what your value is and the new-school just wants to take off running down the beach and get me into an alliance, but I don't wanna turn on the shelter people, my old folks. I don't wanna do that. It's my second chance and I'm in something I've never been in before and I don't know what to do. Old-school, New-School, what do I do?||”|
He says he wants to play hard but not seem like he is. He talks to Peih-Gee and she says she feels like it's shelter people vs beach people. The old-schoolers built the shelter and the new-schoolers wants to run around the beach. Jeff says he feels like he's in an odd situation. They talk about who to pick for a first eviction and she says Abi-Maria and he thinks Vytas based on Shirin's assessment.
Kelley starts thinking about the Hidden Immunity Idol and decides to go look for coconuts and the idol. She noticed a tree with some stuff crammed into it and finds what she thinks is the idol. She tucks it into her pants and heads back to camp with coconuts. She opens it and finds a paper that says it's a clue to the Hidden Immunity Idol. She is told where to find it and says she has to grab it in the middle of the next challenge, which is tied to a raft.At Bayon they get their official flag with a note saying it's time for the first challenge. Kimmi says it will be the very first challenge from season one. Andrew says they need to support each other like a family. Monica is worried since she's small and hopes she can hold her own and says she thinks she's stronger. Joe is leading a yoga session in the morning and Keith says he likes coffee in the morning and says no one wants to see him bending over like Joe the pretty boy. Tasha calls it "Joega" and says it's distracting looking at his body. Over at Ta Keo, Vytas is also doing yoga and shows Shirin a position.
Shirin says he's so over the top and so monkey pose whatever. The others giggle and Spencer is trying not to look at him. Kelley wants him to go away. Vytas is worried that Abi-Maria is sending him negative vibes and doesn't want to be over-confident. Some others talk about voting out Abi-Maria first and Vytas says it makes sense since no one likes her.
In the first Immunity Challenge of season 31, the survivors stream in and Kelley is focused on nabbing the Hidden Immunity Idol. Jeff says they race to a raft, light a torch, then light fires that takes them to a stand where they place their raft. They then make a pole to grab a key that will open a gate so they can light a final fire. Jeff shows the Immunity Idol and says they are also playing for a reward and shows a huge fire-making kit.
Jeff says it's the first challenge and remarks Kelly was there and lost. They all dive in the water and swim for the raft. They have to wait on everyone before they can move the fire raft. Ta Keo takes a small lead. Keith lights the torch for Bayon and Spencer for Ta Keo. They are neck and neck as they move to fire two. Keith lost the fire and he has to light it again but it's wet. Spencer is moving along and Keith's fire is not as high as the others. Spencer and Ta Keo are pulling ahead.
Ta Keo is on the beach lighting fires as they walk, while Keith is struggling. Ta Keo gets all theirs lit and put the raft on the stand. Kelley needs to move down to where the idol is. She had to walk past it and didn't get the chance to grab it. Joe is working on the pole for Bayon and Kelly for Ta Keo. Kelley keeps looking back at the idol. Kelly gets done with the pole and goes for the key. Joe gets his pole done and tries for the key. Kelly has to make her pole longer.
Joe's pole is long enough and he's working on the key. Kelly's is now long enough and she's working on it. Joe has the key but is struggling to lift it. Kelly also gets the key. Kelley steps back, grabs the idol and shoves it in her pants while everyone is focused on the key. Jeremy unlocks for Bayon while Ta Keo falls short even when Spencer tries to reach it. Keith runs and lights the last fire. Bayon wins the first Immunity Challenge.
Bayon grabs the idol and their reward while Jeff tells Ta Keo they have to face Tribal Council. Kelly says it's all her fault and says she doesn't like to let anyone down. Vytas tells her she didn't let them down and to calm down. Jeff says they are heading to Tribal Council right now. Spencer says their tribe is full of idiots and there's no telling what will happen. At Tribal, they all stream in and get their torches for the first time.
Spencer says there's a new element of heart break since the fans voted them back. Woo says he saw a big division happening and says it's old school vs. new school. One builds the shelter and the other strategizes. Terry says he definitely saw that and says he had to sit down and talk to people. Peih-Gee says the second chance is about learning from your mistakes. She says she's trying to split the difference and says you can't get stuck again.
Abi-Maria says her second chance is about growth and learning. She says she's trying not to be a firecracker. Kelley says she's playing catch up and Jeff Varner says there has been a lot of work on the beach in the last three days. Vytas says there has been talk and people know who they want to work with so it won't be a random vote tonight. Woo says he has no idea right now where he's going. Abi-Maria says there's a male thing going on and says she feels nervous. She says it would be heartbreaking to go home tonight.
Woo says it's about how well you can get along with others and Abi-Maria says he's obviously talking about voting to send her out. Kelley says there are cues she's seeing. Jeff Varner says there's so many cues that it's affecting his sleep and says it's a whole different world. He says he's trying hard to be part of this new world of play. Jeff asks if there's an elephant in the room and Jeff Varner says they're about to find out.
In the end, Kelley doesn't play her idol, and Jeff Varner and Spencer join the women and Vytas became the first person eliminated from Survivor: Cambodia. After Vytas's torch is extinguished, Jeff says Ta Keo will have a flint at camp.
Challenge: The Marooning
The tribes are to collect as much supplies as they can in a fishing boat. However, while the tribes are busy gathering items, several yards from the boat is another boat where a large bag of rice is waiting. It is up to the tribes if they will stay longer on the fishing boat or race for the rice. The first person to grab the bag of rice wins it for his or her tribe.
Reward: A large bag of rice.
Winner: Ta Keo
Challenge: Quest for Fire
The tribes are to push a platform with a fire cauldron through the water, lighting torches along the way with the fire in the cauldron. Upon getting onto shore, they must carry the platform and light a series of torches while on land. After this, one member from each tribe will attempt to make a pole long enough with pieces of stick and twine in order to retrieve a key from behind a gate. The first tribe to go past the gate and light a final torch wins immunity.
Reward: Fire-making kit with a tarp.

| VOTED OFF:|
Woo is shown writing Abi-Maria's name down on the parchment and Kelley is shown writing Vytas' name down on the parchment.
|“||(voting for Vytas) I'm sorry, Vytas.||”|
|“||(voting for Abi-Maria) I wanted to play with you but there's still a lot of room for growth.||”|
|“||(chuckles) I remember saying before I came out here-- I remember saying, "I'd rather not get picked than get picked and be the first boot." And it sucks. I mean, you know, I came out here and I tried to find people I wanted to work with and apparently they saw me as a big threat. Like, it's total respect. You know, I-- they were afraid of me and for good reason.||”|
