Sixteen Americans from all walks of life are abandoned on the remote island of Pulau Tiga, near Borneo, in an attempt to be the last person standing and win one million dollars. They are divided into two tribes of eight. At Pagong, Ramona has trouble coping with the harsh realities of island life, while B.B. is annoyed by his tribe's perceived lack of work ethic and slowly begins to alienate himself from the group. Tagi's Richard and Susan have a brief spat over how the group should be led, and Rudy feels the sting of the generation gap. A combined reward/immunity challenge sees Pagong victorious thanks in part to cancer survivor Sonja hindering the Tagi tribe, sending Tagi to Tribal Council to vote off its first member. Stacey attempts to organize the women against Rudy, but Susan betrays the female voting bloc and Sonja becomes the first person voted off the island.

The remaining castaways settle into island life. At Tagi, Rich and Rudy form an unlikely friendship, while Sean earns Sue's ire by building his "Super-Pole 2000" fishing device. Meanwhile, Pagong's Colleen and Greg forge a bond that many tribemates suspect might be a budding romance. Ramona is still struggling, and B.B. butts heads with Joel over the leadership of the tribe and continues to cause friction with the rest of the group. The immunity challenge sees the castaways choking down bug larvae, and ends in a showdown between Gervase and Stacey. Stacey emerges victorious, sending Pagong to Tribal Council where they vote out B.B., who had asked to leave the game.
Image:Borneo.png "Quest for Food" Tagi Pagong Stacey Stillman June 14, 2000 1-03 (3)
After Tagi wins a reward of fishing gear, Rich decides to play the role of the provider, catching fish for the tribe to eat. Over at Pagong, the food situation is much more desperate, and the tribe turns to eating rats. Meanwhile, Greg and Colleen's relationship heats up, with Colleen teasing that it's "all about sex." At Tagi, Stacey's negative attitude aggravates the majority of the tribe, and she's voted off 5-2.
Image:Borneo.png "Too Little Too Late?" Tagi Tagi Ramona Gray June 21, 2000 1-04 (4)
After a harsh storm hits the island, Pagong moves its shelter into the woods. At Tagi, Sean builds a bowling alley, while Richard forms an alliance with Sue and Kelly. Tagi wins creature comforts in an S.O.S. reward challenge, and continues its momentum by winning immunity. Ramona works harder to avoid being voted off, but it's no use, and she gets the axe in a 4-2-1 vote at Tribal Council.
Image:Borneo.png "Pulling Your Own Weight" Pagong Pagong Dirk Been June 28, 2000 1-05 (5)
At Tagi, Dirk and Sean upset the rest of the tribe with their perceived lack of work ethic. Pagong wins a bounty of fruit and three live chickens at a reward challenge, which boosts tribe morale. Tagi seems like a lock for a rowing immunity challenge thanks to whitewater raft guide Kelly, but when she suffers an embarassing defeat, Tagi is forced to go to Tribal Council. Dirk is voted out of the tribe 4-1-1.
Image:Borneo.png "Udder Revenge" Pagong Tagi Joel Klug July 5, 2000 1-06 (6)
The Tagi alliance begins to plan for the upcoming merge, recruiting Rudy to its cause. Pagong, meanwhile, experiences the highs and lows of island cuisine -- they eat their first chicken, and sample the contents of a culinarily-questionable Tree Mail. A sexist remark turns the women of the tribe against Gervase, who is perceived as too smooth for his own good, and Joel, who has been labelled as condescending. Tagi wins an obstacle course immunity challenge, and Greg joins the women in voting Joel out 4-2.

Jenna and Sean serve as ambassadors, and inspect the opposing tribes' respective camps. While the ambassadors meet at an overnight summit to make decisions about the merged tribe, the Tagi alliance decides which member of Pagong to vote out first. The new tribe is christened "Rattana" and moves to Tagi Beach, where Rudy expresses annoyance at the sudden influx of new people. Greg wins the first individual immunity challenge, and Tribal Council results in scattered votes to seven different castaways. This lack of unity, however, allows the alliance to capitalize, and a stunned Gretchen is shown the door.

After 21 days spent missing their families, the Survivors are treated to a brief video message from their loved ones. The winner of the reward challenge would be able to watch their full tape. All of the players receive a video except for Jenna, who laments over missing her children. Greg eventually wins the reward, and shared his sister's (creepy) video with the rest of the tribe. Meanwhile, Greg uses flirtation in an attempt to persuade Richard, but his efforts aren't enough, as Greg becomes the first member of the jury who will decide the winner.
Image:Borneo.png "Old and New Bonds" Colleen Haskell Rudy Boesch Jenna Lewis July 26, 2000 1-09 (9)
When Colleen wins a barbeque dinner reward, she takes Jenna along. The two of them realize that Pagong's days on the island were numbered, and decide to try and form an alliance with Gervase, Sean, and Kelly. Sean refuses to drift from his alphabetical voting strategy, and is very vocal that his vote will be going to Jenna. Meanwhile, Richard decides to celebrate his 39th birthday in the nude. At Tribal Council, Kelly votes against Sean, the three remaining Pagong members vote for Rich, but unbeknownst to Sean; Rich, Sue, and Rudy join him in voting for Jenna, and she becomes the ninth to leave the game.
Image:Borneo.png "Crack in the Alliance" Gervase Peterson Richard Hatch Gervase Peterson August 2, 2000 1-10 (10)
Sue becomes upset that Kelly is trying to play the game for herself rather than the alliance. However, alliances are set aside for a while when the tribe receives news that Gervase's girlfriend gave birth to a baby boy. After winning the reward challenge, Gervase gets a phone call with his girlfriend and a slice of pizza, which he shares with the tribe. But Gervase's luck runs out when Rich wins the immunity challenge and Gervase's torch is snuffed.

Colleen, the sole surviving member of the old Pagong tribe, finds herself surrounded by strategic enemies with nowhere to turn. The biggest Reward Challenge of the game is won by Sean, who spends a night on a luxury yacht with his father. He brings Richard on board with him the next morning, and they enjoy breakfast and lively conversation. Sean's father returns to camp, where everyone questions him for information regarding the outside world. The next Immunity Challenge proves to be a test of balance, which Kelly wins when she narrowly defeats Colleen. Though the Tagi alliance seems to want to eliminate Kelly and then Sean, Kelly's immunity win prolongs her stay and a last-minute shift finds Colleen on the outside of the vote and the eleventh person to be voted out of the game. With her departure, only original Tagi players remain.
