John Carroll is a contestant from Survivor: Marquesas.
John is best known for being the leader of the Rotu Four alliance and voting out Boston Rob. However, his arrogance was exposed at a coconut chopping challenge. This caused the outsiders to band together to vote him out.
John F. Carroll was born in El Paso, Texas, and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. In high school, he was a state-ranked track & field and cross-country runner. He also ran in the Junior Olympics his senior year. After graduation, he attended Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, on a track and cross-country scholarship, and lettered in tennis as a walk-on during his sophomore year. While attending Midland, he was elected class president, appointed Entertainment Director for campus activities, joined the Kappa Phi fraternity, ministered as a Liturgical clown and appeared in campus theatre productions. He holds an Associate of Science degree in Nursing (ASN) from Excelsior College and is a Registered Nurse in Nebraska. In 2000, he delivered the senior commencement speech at Bellevue University after graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Criminal Justice.
After leaving Midland, Carroll spent nearly three years in the United States Air Force where he worked as a medic. In 1990, he moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where he then spent almost eight years working with people afflicted with AIDS. During this period, he raised money and donated significant time and energy to numerous AIDS organizations.
In 1997, Carroll returned to Omaha and began working with US West/Qwest, a telecommunication and broadband company. He soon became a successful sales consultant and trainer. In his spare time, he became a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the world's largest industry-related volunteer organization, and raised money for various relief and community events. In 2001, he decided to leave his job to attend law school.
Carroll briefly attended Creighton University School of Law in August 2001, but withdrew when he was informed that he had been selected to participate in SURVIVOR: MARQUESAS. He will return to Creighton in August 2002, to resume his law studies.

John started of on the Rotu tribe. He formed good relationships with every member of his tribe except Kathy Vavrick-O'Brien, who rubbed her tribe mates the wrong way. Rotu won the first Immunity Challenge, keeping John safe from Tribal Council.
Because of Rotu's lack of protein and real food, John and Gabriel Cade made spears and pig traps to try to catch food. John was most proud of his pig trap, sure that it was going to catch a pig. John took over the role of provider, going fishing to stay on top of his tribe. He caught shrimp, exciting his tribe. Rotu won the following Immunity Challenge.
After it rained during the night, John was freezing, so he helped his tribe rebuild their shelter. John and Kathy started getting along when Kathy stopped trying to boss everybody around. While John went fishing, he accidentally embedded sea urchin needles into his hand. Remembering his pre-game training, along with the fact that he is a nurse, John asked his tribe members to urinate on his hand to reduce the swelling and to stop the poison. Paschal English tried to but was unable, so Kathy had to do it instead. John said he found it awkward while Kathy was peeing on his hand. Rotu continued their winning streak, winning the Immunity Challenge again.
A tribe switch occurred on Day 11. Rotu lost tribe members Kathy, Neleh Dennis and Paschal but gained Maraamu members Rob Mariano, Sean Rector and Vecepia Towery. It was during this time when John created the Rotu Four alliance, which consisted of the original tribe members Zoe Zanidakis, Tammy Leitner and Robert DeCanio. Gabriel was left out of the alliance for his odd demeanor and for not being trusted. The new Rotu tribe continued winning, keeping John safe.
Rotu finally lost a challenge when they lost the Reward Challenge in episode 5. They lost the following Immunity Challenge as well. John's alliance finally had a chance to flaunt their power. They had to decide between voting out Rob, who was a tribe outsider and a schemer, or Gabriel, who did not seem wiling to actually play the game. Originally, the alliance was set on voting out Rob, but, when Gabriel seemed unsure about whom he wanted to vote for, the alliance switched and changed their votes to Gabriel. Rotu went on to win the Immunity Challenge in the following episode, keeping John safe.
The two tribes merged in the episode True Lies. After reuniting with ex-Rotu members Neleh and Paschal, John's alliance had the majority. They ousted Rob at Tribal Council since he was the biggest strategic threat remaining. John's downfall came during the episode 8 Immunity Challenge, when John's alliance revealed the chopping order, making Neleh and Paschal flip on John's alliance. At Tribal Council, the counter alliance considered John to be the leader of the alliance, so they blindsided him. John became the first member of the Jury. At the Final Tribal Council John wanted to vote for Neleh, but, after she answered poorly to his question, he voted for Vecepia instead, which ultimately lead to Vecepia beating Neleh.
