Survivor: Panama is the second season of the British reality show, Survivor. It was broadcast on ITV1 from March 13 to May 29, 2002.

After 37 days in Panama, detective Jonny Gibb defeated teacher Susannah Moffat in a unanimous 7-0 jury vote to become the Ultimate Survivor. He became the first winner of any English-language edition of Survivor to achieve a Perfect Game.

Production[]

The second season took place in Bocas del Toro. Filming took place from January 18 to February 23, 2002.

Originally, Beverley Mansell, a 45-year-old mother of three, was cast on the season. However, less than 24 hours before filming began, she dropped out over concerns for the wellbeing of her 6-year-old son, Grant. She was replaced with Drew Agger.

Twist/Changes[]

  • Fewer Contestants: The game started with just 12 contestants, four fewer than the first season.
  • Shorter Game: The game lasted 37 days, three days shorter than the first season.
  • Smaller Merge: The two tribes merged when there were just 8 contestants remaining in the game.
  • Public Jury Vote: The British public were given the right to cast a seventh jury vote.

Season Summary[]

The twelve contestants were divided into two tribes, North Island and South Island. South Island had a rough start at the beginning of the game, losing the first three challenges in a row. The tribe's early losses sent them to the first two Tribal Councils, where they voted out Sarah McCombie (for being ill and homesick) and subsequently Lee Capon (because some tribe members thought they would be in a better position if he left). However, the tribe's losing streak did not last for long, and they fought back, winning the next four challenges. North Island was sent to Tribal Council twice in a row, where they voted out Tayfun Kadioglu (for not fitting in) and subsequently Meeta Bose (because she had asked to leave).

On Day 14, the two tribes merged with four members each, and the merged tribe was named Columbus. Before the merge, the two tribes had vowed to remain loyal to one another through to the very end. At the new tribe's first Tribal Council, expectedly, there was a tied 4-4 tie between Helen Carney and Bridget Griffiths. According to Survivor rules, the castaway with the highest number of previous votes would be eliminated, but both Helen and Bridget had previously received 1 vote, so a revote took place, which was deadlocked. The two tied contestants then took part in a sudden death trivia quiz about Panama; Helen was eliminated after the second question, meaning that South Island was now in the majority. At the next three Tribal Councils, South Island voted out the last remaining members of North Island consecutively (Alastair Brogan, Drew Agger and Dave Porter).

At this point, only original members of South Island remained; they now had no choice but to vote out one of their own. By a unanimous vote, Bridget, the original tribe outsider, was voted out at the next Tribal Council. The three remaining members of Columbus then competed in their Final Immunity Challenge; Susannah Moffat was victorious, and was given the power to decide who would sit next to her in the Final Two. Despite believing that Jonny Gibb was less popular than John Dalzell, she voted out the latter thinking that she was remaining true to a deal that she had with Jonny.

At the Final Tribal Council, Susannah garnered no votes as people believed that she did not need the money and was "undeserving", and Jonny received all six of the jury votes from the contestants and an additional vote from the British public due to his likeability in an overwhelming majority of 89% to Susannah's 11%. Jonny became the second Ultimate Survivor of Survivor (U.K.) and the first ever contestant on an English-language season of Survivor to have played a Perfect Game.
