Expedition Robinson is the Swedish version of the Survivor franchise. It is the very first televised version of Survivor produced by Charlie Parsons, debuting in 1997. The name is based on the literary pieces Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson, both being stories of people marooned by shipwrecks. Since 2009, the series has been known simply as Robinson.

Format Variations

Although the first season of Expedition Robinson set the precedent for the basic format of the Survivor franchise, starting with the second season, twists were added to make the game more interesting.

Division of Tribes

Over the course of the show's run, producers would divide the tribes in different ways. The first major change in tribal divisions came in the show's third season but there would be many variations in the way tribes were divided as the show continued.

The following seasons had an unusual division of tribes:

• Expedition Robinson 1999 - The castaways were initially split into four tribes of four members each based on their gender. The two male tribes were known as East Team and West Team. The two female tribes were known as North Team and South Team. This division lasted until East Team and West Team were absorbed into North Team and South Team respectively in episode 3.
• Expedition Robinson 2002 - The castaways were split into tribes based on their gender. North Team was comprised of all women with one male leader, while South Team was comprised of all men with one female leader. This division lasted until episode 4, when a Tribe Switch occurred.
• Expedition Robinson 2003 - The castaways were initially comprised of only returning players who all lived as one tribe, known as the Veterans. In episode 2, a new tribe comprised of new players who were fans of the show, entered the game. They were known as the Challengers. This division lasted for only one episode as a Tribe Switch occurred in episode 3.
• Robinson: Karibien - The castaways were initially split into two tribes based on their gender: Agwe was comprised entirely of men, Brise was comprised entirely of women. This division came to an end in episode 2 following a Tribe Switch.
• Robinson 2011 - The cast was initially divided into two tribes of four women. This division, while not officially ended, slowly lost significance as more men joined the game after being imprisoned at the start of the game and after some of the women either quit, were evacuated or were eliminated unconventionally.
• Robinson 2023 - The castaways were initially split into two tribes based age, with an entire tribe of younger players and an entire tribe of older players with each tribe consisting of 11 members. This division came to an end in Episode 15 following a Tribe Switch.
• Robinson: 2024 - The castaways were initially split into two tribes based on their gender: The South Team was comprised entirely of men, the North Team was comprised entirely of women.
