Expeditie Robinson is a popular reality television program broadcast in the Netherlands as well as the Flanders region of Belgium that debuted on September 15, 2000.

It is the ninth aired production of a format that was developed in the UK by Charlie Parsons. No British TV channel or production company believed in the idea, but the Swedish production company Strix Television (STV) did and thus the first season of the Survivor franchise was broadcast in Sweden in 1997 under the title of Expedition Robinson. The name of the show alludes to Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson, two stories featuring people marooned by shipwrecks. The format was successful and has since been produced in many other countries and regions, most notably under the title Survivor. The show would later be produced for the Netherlands and the Flanders region of Belgium and proved to be popular with audiences.

The show originally featured ordinary Dutch and Flemish citizens, but from Expeditie Robinson 2010 onwards, the show featured almost exclusively Dutch and Flemish celebrities, with only Expeditie Robinson 2017 and Nederland vs België having their casts comprised partially or entirely of ordinary Flemish and/or Dutch citizens.

Expeditie Robinson 2013 was the first season without castaways from Belgium due to low ratings for the Belgian broadcasts. However, the Flemish host, Evi Hanssen, continued to co-host the show with Dutch host Dennis Weening. From the subsequent season, Dutch TV host Nicolette Kluijver would replace Evi Hanssen.

Format

The format of the series closely mirrors that of Expedition Robinson 1997, the first season of the Survivor franchise. The standard format features sixteen castaways divided into two tribes who are marooned in a remote location and compete in a variety of physical and mental challenges to win rewards and immunity from Tribal Council, where someone will be voted out in a secret ballot. At around the halfway point of the season, the tribes merge and castaways compete for Individual Immunity (known as samensmelting) with Tribal Councils occurring periodically. These would usually continue until either four or three castaways remained. They would compete in a final challenge, with the loser(s) being automatically eliminated and becoming the final members of the jury. The jury would then vote for either one of the Final Three or Final Two to become the Sole Survivor, referred to in this series as Robinson.
