The Extra Vote was a twist introduced in Survivor: Worlds Apart. It allows players to vote twice in one Tribal Council.

Overview

In appearance, the extra vote is similar to the parchment used in Tribal Council, however, it has a distinct golden margin on all four sides. This vote can be played until there are only five contestants left. The player that owns it may vote another player twice or vote two separate people. It will be counted as any other vote. However, this also means that this vote can still be nullified by a Hidden Immunity Idol.

To use this vote, the player must state their intention in voting again before Jeff Probst tallies the votes.

History

Survivor: Worlds Apart

The Extra Vote (described only as an "advantage") first appeared at the Survivor Auction in "Bring the Popcorn", when Dan Foley, Carolyn Rivera, and Mike Holloway paid $480 for the advantage. As the bid ended in a tie, the contestants drew rocks for a chance to win it. Dan won the rock draw and the Extra Vote. Tyler Fredrickson later searched Dan's bag and discovered the advantage and its powers. Dan played his advantage at the Day 35 Tribal Council. Afraid that she might be eliminated as a result of the Extra Vote being cast, Carolyn used her Hidden Immunity Idol to negate all votes for her (including the extra), blindsiding Dan himself.

Survivor: Cambodia

A variant of the Extra Vote was introduced during the Immunity Challenge in "Witches Coven". While the challenge was underway, Jeff released a row of buoys, and the first to bail out of the challenge and swim toward their buoy won the advantage. Stephen Fishbach and Spencer Bledsoe raced to their buoys, but it was Stephen who won the advantage. Back at camp, Stephen learned his advantage: he obtained the privilege to vote twice, but in turn, he would deny a tribemate the right to vote. Stephen decided to use his advantage on the Day 29 Tribal Council. He chose to "steal" Joe Anglim's vote, and voted against Abi-Maria Gomes and Joe, but was voted out in a 4-3-2 vote after Spencer flipped on him.

Survivor: Kaôh Rōng

The Extra Vote was introduced during the final eight Reward Challenge in "I'm Not Here to Make Good Friends" as one of the three rewards that could be competed for in the challenge A Leg Up. Aubry Bracco, Cydney Gillon, and Tai Trang chose to compete for this advantage, with Tai ultimately outlasting Aubry to win. Tai later opened up the advantage to reveal it was an Extra Vote that would be valid until five contestants remain. Tai used his advantage at the Day 32 Tribal Council. He placed his two votes on Michele Fitzgerald, but his plan didn't work as his alliance decided to eliminate Kyle Jason instead, resulting in a 4-2-1 vote.

Trivia

  • The extra vote has been introduced in several international versions of the series like Expedition Robinson and Survivor (Philippines). In the Philippine version, the double vote was also offered during the auction as a regular sealed item. The winning bidder, Charisse Yacapin, was given a choice between an already revealed food item and the still-covered power to vote twice. She chose the food.
  • Currently, this twist has been regularly in play since Survivor: Worlds Apart.
  • The Extra Vote has never been used to successfully eliminate someone. In Worlds Apart and Survivor: Cambodia, the person playing the Extra Vote was eliminated the same night, while in Kaôh Rōng, the person it was used against survived that Tribal Council.
