David Ernest Oldfield is a contestant from Celebrity Survivor Australia.

A valued member of Kakula, David was swapped over to the opposing Moso tribe, along with Elton Flatley. However, they managed to convince Amber Petty to flip, which in turn caused Justin Melvey to flip, putting David and Elton into a firm majority position on the tribe. Despite this, David entered the merge with few allies and distanced himself from former allies Elton and Guy Leech, instead building bonds with the majority alliance and relying on individual immunity to prevent being voted out. When Guy and Justin returned to the game in a surprising twist, David attempted to convince Imogen Bailey and Nicolle Dickson to join him in voting out Guy, however Guy and Justin were able to convince the girls to target David instead for his challenge strength.

In the late 1990's, David Oldfield was a regular fixture on nightly news and current affairs shows - but not as a host.

Rather, it was due to the cloud of controversy that surrounded him after he formed the nationalist and protectionist political group, One Nation, with Pauline Hanson and David Ettridge in 1997.

David, 47, is now an Independent Member Of The Legislative Council but if he feels he has any weakness as a contestant on Celebrity Survivor, it’s that his fellow tribe members might have a predetermined idea of him based on what they’ve heard in the media.

“They may have preconceived ideas of me based on what are some of the commonly held ideas of my views,” he says. “I think that’s a disadvantage.”

“This show though is a good chance for people to perhaps see me differently to what they have in the past. It gives me the opportunity to do a bit of swimming, a bit of running, and show there’s some activity in my life. I don’t mind getting out and fossicking for some coconuts, tracking down some taro, climbing up and knocking off some bananas, hunting for paw paw or doing a bit of fishing.”

Along with his wife Lisa, David will miss his three cockatiels the most – Albert, Georgie and Audrey – as well as his horses. “I don’t ever think of the animals we have as pets as such,” he says. “I think of them like family members. I’m very affectionate towards them."

While many people may think that someone with David’s background would benefit in a game where politics is paramount, he isn’t convinced.

“The general view of people who are in politics is that they are sneaky, crooked and dishonest and I’m actually not like that,” he says. “I’m not the sort of person that is able to make grubby deals. If I tell somebody I’m going to do something, I do it. So I’m not your classic publicly perceived politician with back room dirty deals, doing people in and lying to them – which is probably a tremendous advantage if you are all of those things where this show is concerned! So I have to be careful in that people might have a negative perception of me."

David's chosen charity is Legacy Foundation.

Celebrity Survivor Australia[]

The oldest contestant on the series, David began the game on the Kakula tribe. Despite not being from a sports background like the majority of the group, David quickly made himself useful as a very handy chef, whilst also being an integral part of Kakula's challenge dominance. He was also well-liked by the tribe in spite of of his political background. This allowed David to join the power structure early in the game, most notably joining Guy Leech's effort to oust newcomer and threatening player Ben Wynn on Day 5. Despite being the oldest player on the cast, David made his challenge strength apparent, something which led to him being chosen for the Moso tribe on the tribe switch.

On Day 6 the tribes were swapped and David found himself on the new Moso tribe with ally Elton Flatley, the pair being on the outs compared to the three former Moso members. However, David was able to escape certain elimination after losing the Day 7 Immunity Challenge after Amber Petty flipped on her alliance, evening out the numbers on the tribe. David was once again in danger on Day 9, however a betrayed Justin Melvey chose to side with the boys and vote out Amber, once again saving David. From there, David and Elton gained the majority in the Moso tribe, although their newfound challenge strength allowed the trio to cruise to the merge without losing another number.

After merging on Day 12, David found himself in the minority after former ally Gabrielle Richens' flip at the last tribal council. To combat this, David attempted to distance himself from former allies Elton and Guy; when Guy took Elton and Gabrielle on the Day 12 reward, David used the opportunity to make bonds with the majority alliance whilst weakening his former allies' positions in the process. David also managed to find safety in challenge dominance; he won two straight immunity challenges on Days 13 and 15 along with a joint reward with Gabrielle and Imogen Bailey on Day 14 that furthered his good graces with the majority. This saved David from elimination over Guy and Elton respectively at the first two merge tribal councils.

On Day 17, fortunes shifted for David as he lost his first individual immunity, however he once again managed to scrape by elimination as cracks began to form in the majority alliance. Nicolle Dickson revealed to Imogen that Justin had offered her money early on in exchange for remaining in the game, which caused the pair to turn on Justin at tribal council. They convinced Gabrielle to turn on her ally, and David was spared from elimination. In a crucial immunity challenge on Day 19, David once again returned to form, keeping himself safe against the alliance of three and forcing Imogen and Nicolle to turn on Gabrielle.

By this point David was the strongest threat for winning the game between his challenge prowess and strong relationships with the jury, however a twist on Day 20 meant two members of the jury would be returning to the game. Guy and Justin ended up winning this competition, and, realising they would need to work together to even come close to winning, the pair formed an alliance. Imogen won the Day 21 Immunity Challenge, leaving David vulnerable, however Guy and Justin initially pitched an idea to David to vote out Nicolle. David saw through this scheme and was dead-set on once again voting out Guy, however he did not expect the duo to instead turn to the girls to vote out David instead. Ultimately, despite David's best efforts, he was voted out on Day 21 in a 4-1 vote after Guy and Justin convinced the girls that David had a better shot at winning than they did, becoming the third member of the jury.

A deadlock tiebreaker between Justin and Nicolle on Day 23 could not be resolved by past votes, so it was up to the jury to decide who left the game. Angered by Nicolle's ousting of the jury and lacklustre gameplay, and also in support of Guy, the jury unanimously chose to vote out Nicolle 3-0. At Final Tribal Council on Day 25, David vilified Guy for his dishonest gameplay, particularly in convincing the girls to vote him out, however he was satisfied with Guy's answer and ultimately claimed he respected his gameplay despite the sneakiness. Ultimately, David's vote helped Guy become Sole Survivor in a close 3-2 vote.
