Australian Survivor (2016) is the first season of the Network Ten incarnation of the competitive reality TV show Australian Survivor.
After 55 days, Kristie Bennett defeated Lee Carseldine in a jury vote of 8-1 to become the Sole Survivor. To date, Australian Survivor (2016) has produced six returning players (Brooke Jowett, Flick Egginton, Lee Carseldine, Nick Iadanza, Phoebe Timmins and Sam Webb) for future seasons.
Production[]
This season, announced by Ten in November 2015, is the third Australian edition of the program, the second to feature non-celebrity contestants and the first to air on Network Ten. This season is hosted by Jonathan LaPaglia.[1]
This new season gives Australian Survivor the rare distinction of being one of the few Australian programs to have aired across all three commercial networks in Australia. This season was filmed in Samoa, the same location as four seasons of the American edition: Survivor: Samoa, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains, Survivor: South Pacific, and Survivor: One World. The filming location was later officially confirmed on May 9, 2016, first by LaPaglia in a radio interview on the Hamish & Andy show.[2]
In total, 250 Australians and at least 180 Samoan locals worked on the program, including Trent Pattison, who has previously worked on the American version of Survivor as well as Ten's I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!.
Twists/Changes[]
- 55-Day Game: This season is filmed for 55 days, the longest in the Australian franchise.
- Three Tribes: The 24 castaways are divided into three tribes of eight.
- Hidden Immunity Idol: Hidden Immunity Idols will be available, which will abide to the same standard rules from the American version.
- Double Tribal Council: The two losing tribes at the Day 12 Immunity Challenge will both attend Tribal Council.
- Tribe Switch: At the Double Tribal Council, each tribe was told to vote without knowing that the person with the most votes would be sent to the other tribe attending the session. The person sent over also gets to pick one member of their original tribe to join them on his new tribe.
- Tribe Dissolve: On Day 19, the tribes met for a Reward Challenge. Saanapu won, and were given the right to individually choose which tribe they want to stay on and collectively choose the members of the other two tribes to join the new Saanapu tribe. The nine who were not picked formed the new Vavau tribe, and Aganoa was disbanded.
- Kidnap: After winning the Day 29 Immunity Challenge, Saanapu was given the right to send one of their tribe members to observe Vavau's Tribal Council. They sent Brooke, and she was given the right of picking one of the Vavau tribemates to join Saanapu, and the Tribal Council ended with no elimination.
- Exile Beach: On Day 39, the four people eliminated during the first stage of the Immunity Challenge, were sent to "Exile Beach" where they will stay until Tribal Council. In addition, there was a Hidden Immunity Idol hidden at Exile Beach. This twist was used again after the Night 47 Reward Challenge, where the people who did not get to go on the reward were sent to Exile Beach.

Season Summary[]
The game began with three tribes of eight, and in each, an alliance of four or five formed the majority. On Saanapu, Flick and Brooke recruited Sam, Matt, and Conner. On Vavau, Craig, Andrew, Sue, and Jennah-Louise joined forces. And on Aganoa, Evan aligned with Phoebe, Rohan, Lee, and El, but drama from the idol clue twist between him and Rohan would see the alliance turn on Evan. In a mock vote at a joint Tribal Council consisting of Vavau and Saanapu, Conner and Nick were voted out but instead of leaving the game, were switched to the other tribe and they brought Tegan and Sam with them respectively.
With 18 contestants remaining, a Reward Challenge won by Saanapu gave them the power to decide which tribe between Vavau and Saanapu to stay on. After the five remaining Saanapu remembers chose to stay at Saanapu, they then had the power to choose their remaining members. They selected Sam, El, and Lee for their challenge strength as well as Jennah-Louise with the intention of voting her off.
The game became one-sided after the swap, as not only did the stronger Saanapu tribe dominate in challenges but Phoebe's idol plays ousted the two strongest members of Vavau in Rohan and Craig. After a fake Tribal Council spared Kristie, Phoebe's ally who she threw under the bus to save herself, Brooke further decimated Vavau by adding Sue to her tribe. Phoebe would be voted out at the next Tribal, and the tribes would merge at 13.
The Saanapu alliance, with the original members of Flick, Brooke, Matt, and Sam at the core and with the help of members from post-swap Saanapu, would vote out the remnants of post-swap Vavau as well as outsiders from Saanapu up until the final seven. At that point, Flick viewed Brooke as too big of a threat and flipped to Lee, El, and Kristie to vote out her best friend. Despite El and Lee's obvious strong bond, which appeared romantic to some, Flick and Kristie did not flip back and voted out Sam and Matt.
At the final four, Flick tried to force a 2-2 tiebreaker but Kristie still would not flip and Flick was sent to the jury. Despite not having won a previous individual challenge, Kristie won the Final Immunity Challenge and voted El out. At Final Tribal Council, despite Lee having more control of the game, Kristie's underdog status and the fruition of her floater strategy resulted in her receiving 8 of the 9 jury votes and becoming the Sole Survivor.

Notes: ^1 Combined Reward and Immunity Challenge.
^2 Peter quit the game the afternoon of Day 10, cancelling Aganoa's Tribal Council. ^3 In a surprise twist, Vavau and Saanapu were subjected to a mock vote, where the players voted out were switched to the other tribe. Those voted off, Nick and Conner, were given the privilege to take an original tribemate to join them on their new tribe. They chose Tegan and Sam respectively. ^4 A tie occurred. Per Australian Survivor rules, a revote would commence. ^5 Per Australian Survivor rules, in case of a deadlock tie, the non-immune players would have an open discussion to eliminate one of the tied players. If no consensus is reached, the non-immune castaways would be forced to draw rocks. ^6 A Hidden Immunity Idol was used, therefore all votes against the user were negated. ^7 After winning the Immunity Challenge, Saanapu was allowed to send one member to eavesdrop on Vavau's Tribal Council. They sent Brooke. At Tribal Council, the tribe found that, instead of a vote, Brooke was allowed to permanently kidnap one member of Vavau. She chose Sue. ^8 This person sat out of the Reward Challenge, but correctly chose the winning team, allowing them to go on the reward. ^9 The season premiere and season finale were coded into two programs ("Launch" and "Tribal Council" for the premiere and "Grand Finale" and "Winner Announced" for the finale), thus two separate sets of ratings were produced. |
